Dear Granby Public Schools Families,
As November brings colder (and windy) weather, I’d like to share how we decide whether to cancel, delay, or dismiss school early due to inclement weather or emergencies. Please remember that, per the Connecticut State Department of Education, remote learning days are no longer an option.
The safety of our students and staff is always my top priority. Because our students come from Granby, Hartland, and Hartford, weather conditions can vary greatly—even within our own community. I make these decisions carefully and in consultation with local and regional partners.
Key factors include:
Storm timing and severity
Snow or ice accumulation and temperatures
Power outages and travel conditions
Input from Public Works, Police, Transportation, and Facilities
Updates from neighboring districts
Whenever possible, delays or cancellations will be announced by 5:45 a.m. or even the night before if possible. Early dismissals will be communicated promptly to allow time for family planning.
Notifications will be shared via:
ParentSquare (message, post, and phonecall/text)
Local TV and radio stations
The GPS website

Thank you for your understanding and support. I know these decisions impact families, and I appreciate your flexibility and cooperation. Let’s hope for a safe and mild winter!
Warm regards,
Cheri P. Burke
Superintendent of Schools
